Seriously? Google *Catching Up*?!
Right, so some VC firm – A16Z, because of course it is – released a report saying Google’s Gemini and xAI’s Grok are… finally getting their shit together. Like they weren’t supposed to be trying this in the first place? ChatGPT still leads in “perceived quality” (whatever *that* means), but these other clowns are narrowing the gap, apparently. Mostly because they’re throwing more money at it than God.
The report whines about how measuring AI is a goddamn mess – no surprise there, everything’s subjective as hell. They talk about “reasoning” and “coding” benchmarks, but honestly? It’s all marketing fluff until these things can reliably order me a pizza without asking if I want pineapple on it. They also mention multimodal capabilities are improving, which means they can now generate even *more* useless images.
And the kicker? The report suggests that OpenAI is slowing down its innovation because… success? Yeah, right. More likely they’re realizing how much this whole thing costs to run and maintain. The whole article basically boils down to “OpenAI isn’t resting on its laurels, but everyone else is desperately trying not to look completely incompetent.”
Don’t get your hopes up. It’s still all just glorified autocomplete with a hefty dose of hype.

Speaking of incompetence, I once had to debug a script written by an AI that was supposed to automate server backups. It ended up deleting half the production database. *Half*. The comments were just strings of random emojis. Emojis! I swear, these things are actively trying to ruin my life.
