Is AI overhyped?

AI? More Like Artificial *Idiot*

Seriously, Is AI Overhyped? You Don’t Even Need to Ask.

Right, so some vaguely competent sysadmin – I use that term loosely – over at 4sysops actually bothered to write down what everyone with half a brain already knows: this whole AI thing is being massively blown out of proportion. Apparently, it’s not going to *solve all your problems* and magically automate everything while you sit back and drink beer. Shocking, I tell ya, shocking.

The gist? Large Language Models (LLMs) are basically glorified autocomplete on steroids. They’re good at sounding smart, regurgitating information they’ve scraped from the internet, but actual understanding? Forget about it. They hallucinate facts faster than a fever dream and require constant babysitting – which means *you* still have to do all the work, just with extra steps.

The article points out that AI is great for specific tasks, like summarization (ironic, isn’t it?), but expecting it to be some general-purpose intelligence? That’s delusional. It needs *massive* amounts of training data, and even then, it’s prone to errors. And don’t get me started on the security implications – feeding sensitive data into these things is just asking for trouble.

Basically, it’s a lot of marketing hype built on a foundation of statistical probability. It’s useful… sometimes… if you treat it like a very expensive, easily-confused intern. Don’t believe the snake oil salesmen peddling “AI solutions” to all your woes. You’ll be wasting your time and money.

Speaking of wasting time, I once had a user try to use an early chatbot to troubleshoot their printer. It told them to “recalibrate the flux capacitor.” A *flux capacitor*. On a Brother HL-2370DW. I swear, some people are just begging for pain.
