North Korea’s IT Worker Rampage Continues Amid DoJ Action

Ugh, More North Korean Bullshit

Seriously? *Still* With This Crap?

Okay, look. The Department of Justice is STILL chasing after these goddamn North Korean IT workers pretending to be legitimate freelancers. Apparently, they’re still pulling the long con – using stolen identities and fake profiles on sites like Upwork and Fiverr to get remote jobs. They funnel money back to Pyongyang through a labyrinthine network of shell companies and crypto wallets. It’s not exactly rocket science, people.

The DoJ indicted several more individuals this week (because apparently arresting them is… difficult) and issued warnings about the tactics they use. Tactics that have been going on for *years*. They’re basically digital pickpockets, but with state sponsorship. They’re targeting anything from simple web development to more complex software gigs. And guess what? Companies are still falling for it.

The article highlights how they use multiple layers of obfuscation – fake companies in Russia and China, bogus passports, the whole nine yards. It’s a pain in my ass just *reading* about it, let alone trying to stop it. They’re even using US-based accomplices now! Seriously? Are people that desperate for a few bucks they’ll help fund a dictatorship?

The bottom line: be incredibly skeptical of any remote worker you hire, especially if the price seems too good to be true. Do your due diligence. And frankly, if someone’s LinkedIn profile looks like it was built in 1998, run. Just…run.

Honestly, I’m starting to think some companies *want* to get hacked just so they can claim insurance money. It’s the only explanation for this level of stupidity.

And Another Thing…

I once had to clean up a server after some script kiddie installed a rootkit. Turns out, the “rootkit” was just a badly written PHP script that displayed a picture of Kim Jong-un wearing sunglasses. The level of incompetence… it haunts me still. Makes dealing with these North Korean clowns almost *comforting* in comparison. Almost.
