Google Chrome adds AI-powered store summaries to help US shoppers

Chrome’s Latest Bullshit

Oh, *Great*. More AI “Help” You Didn’t Ask For.

Right, so Google Chrome, in their infinite wisdom (read: desperate attempt to stay relevant), has decided we’re all too fucking stupid to read product descriptions ourselves. They’ve crammed some AI-powered summary feature into the browser for US shoppers. It’s supposed to pull key details from online stores – specs, shipping info, return policies – and spit it out in a neat little box at the top of the page.

Apparently, this is going to “save time” and make shopping easier. Yeah, because spending 30 seconds actually *looking* at the store’s information is such an unbearable burden on your delicate sensibilities. It’s currently rolling out for a small group of users, so thankfully not everyone is cursed with this yet.

They’re using Gemini (of course they are) and it’ll be integrated into the AI overview feature. Expect inaccuracies, expect bias, expect to still have to double-check everything because Google can’t get anything right without a mountain of user feedback. It also only works on certain stores for now, so don’t expect this to work everywhere.

Honestly? Just read the damn page. But no, we need AI to hold our hands through *everything* now. Fucking ridiculous.

Speaking of useless AI, I once had to debug a script that was supposed to automatically order pizza based on user mood. It kept ordering anchovies for everyone who typed anything remotely negative. Turns out the training data was mostly angry Reddit comments about pineapple on pizza. Don’t even get me started on the support tickets…
