Seriously? Another Valuation Hike.
Oh, joy. Anthropic, the Claude people – you know, the ones trying to build an AI that *won’t* immediately try to kill us all (supposedly) – are apparently sniffing around a $170 billion valuation. Yeah, you read that right. Billion. And they’re looking for another $5 billion in funding to fuel this… whatever it is they’re doing.
Apparently, investors are throwing money at them like confetti because “responsible AI” is the new hotness. Like throwing cash at a problem will magically make it safe. It’s all based on projections and promises, naturally. They claim to be making progress with their safety research (surprise, surprise) and that’s enough for some venture capitalists to lose their minds.
The round is reportedly led by existing investors – meaning they’re already deep in this mess and probably can’t back out now without looking like complete idiots. There’s talk of a new model coming, naturally. Bigger, better, more… safe? We’ll see about that. I bet it will still be able to write convincing phishing emails.
Honestly, the whole thing reeks of hype and desperation. But hey, who am I to question the flow of capital into a black hole of algorithms? Just another day in the impending AI apocalypse, funded by people with too much money and not enough sense.

Speaking of “safe,” I once had to debug a script that was supposed to automatically shut down servers during off-peak hours. Turns out, the programmer hadn’t accounted for daylight savings time. So at 2 AM *standard* time, it started shutting down production servers. “Responsible automation,” they called it. Yeah, right. Just like “responsible AI.” Don’t trust anything that claims to be thinking for itself.
