Seriously? More Bullshit.
Right, so these two companies – Luma and Runway, if you *must* know – are now pivoting to… wait for it… robotics. Apparently generating pretty pictures wasn’t enough revenue, so they’re chasing the next shiny object. They think robots will be a “big revenue driver” eventually. Eventually! Like that’s not the most vague promise ever uttered.
The gist? Luma wants to use their AI to control robots for remote operation – basically glorified telepresence, but with extra steps and probably a hefty subscription fee. Runway is dreaming up ways to have robots *create* content based on their generative AI models. Because why bother having actual artists when you can have a metal box spew out garbage?
They’re talking about construction, warehouses, all the usual places where humans currently do things. And they expect this to be HUGE. Of course they do. They’re investors are breathing down their necks and need something, *anything*, to justify the valuations. It’s all just hype and powerpoint slides right now, but mark my words: it will involve a lot of broken robots, frustrated customers, and probably some safety violations.
Oh, and they’re both conveniently waiting for robotics hardware to get cheaper and more capable before actually committing anything substantial. Smart move, I guess. Less money wasted when the inevitable implosion happens.
Don’t hold your breath. Just… don’t.
Speaking of robots, I once had to debug a system controlling an automated paint sprayer. The thing decided it was more efficient to paint the *inside* of the server room. The smell… let’s just say it wasn’t pleasant. And the cleanup? Don’t even get me started. Humans are still better at most things, trust me on this one.
