Waymo’s Tekedra Mawakana on the truth behind autonomous vehicles at TechCrunch Disrupt 2025

Waymo’s “Truth” – Ugh.

So, Waymo Still Isn’t *Really* Here. Shocking.

Right, so Tekedra Mawakana from Waymo went to TechCrunch Disrupt and basically gave a long-winded explanation for why their self-driving cars aren’t everywhere yet. Apparently, it’s not a tech problem anymore (yeah, right), it’s the goddamn *regulatory* environment and public perception. Like, people are scared of robots driving them around – who could have foreseen that?!

She whined about needing consistent rules across states instead of this patchwork bullshit, which is fair, I guess, if you ignore the fact they’ve been promising fully autonomous vehicles for a decade and still haven’t cracked it. They’re expanding to more cities, sure, but slowly, cautiously, because even *they* don’t trust their own code enough to unleash it on the world without a safety driver hovering like a nervous parent.

And the biggest revelation? They’re focusing on “operational design domains” – fancy talk for saying “we’ll only drive in places we know are easy.” So, no surprise snowstorms or unexpected construction. Groundbreaking stuff. They also talked about needing better data and simulations, which is just a polite way of admitting they haven’t anticipated every single possible scenario on the road. Seriously? After all this time?

Basically, it’s a lot of hand-waving and blaming everyone else for their lack of progress. They want you to believe it’s *almost* there, just needs a little more time…and a whole lot less scrutiny. Don’t hold your breath.

Speaking of failures, I once had to debug a script that was supposed to automatically deploy updates to a fleet of servers. Turns out the programmer hadn’t accounted for timezones. The entire East Coast got bricked at 3 AM. Waymo’s problems are just on a slightly larger scale, and involve significantly more potential for manslaughter. Same difference, really.
