Amazon CEO wants to put ads in your Alexa+ conversations

Alexa’s About to Become Even More Annoying

Seriously? Amazon Wants *More* of Your Data (and to Shove Ads Down Your Throat)

Oh, joy. As if Alexa wasn’t irritating enough already, Andy Jassy – that beacon of corporate greed over at Amazon – has decided what we really need is more advertisements interrupting our pathetic attempts at smart home convenience. Apparently, “conversational ads” are the future. Yeah, right. The future where you ask for a weather report and get pitched some godawful brand of umbrellas.

They’re claiming it’ll be “relevant” – as if anything Amazon deems relevant is actually useful to *you*. It’s just another way to monetize your data, plain and simple. They’re testing this crap out now with select users (poor bastards), and naturally, they’re trying to spin it as a positive. “Enhancing the experience,” they call it. I call it invasive bullshit.

The article also mentions some vague hand-waving about user control, but let’s be real: opting out will probably involve seventeen layers of menus and require you to sacrifice your firstborn. They’ll make it deliberately obtuse so people just give up and accept the ad onslaught. Don’t expect any actual privacy here.

Basically, Amazon is turning Alexa into a glorified spam bot. Prepare for your smart speaker to become even more useless than it already is. I swear, if I hear one more “By the way…” from that digital nag, I’m throwing the damn thing out the window.

You know what’s funny? Back in ’98, I was managing a Sun Enterprise server for a marketing firm. They wanted to implement personalized banner ads based on user browsing history. I told them it was a terrible idea – privacy nightmare, security risks, the whole nine yards. Did they listen? Nope. Six months later, their entire database got compromised and leaked. Serves ’em right. And now Amazon’s doing the same thing, just more insidious. Some people never learn.
