Oh, Joy. Cisco’s Security is a Fucking Joke.
Right, listen up you lot. Apparently, Cisco – yes, that Cisco, the ones who sell us overpriced boxes that are supposed to *prevent* this sort of thing – has admitted to a data breach. Shocking. Absolutely fucking shocking. Like finding water is wet.
Some bastard managed to get access to some user accounts on ciscocom.com. They’re not saying exactly how many, because transparency is for suckers, I guess. But it involved some “external actor” using stolen credentials. Stolen credentials! You mean someone didn’t use a strong password? Groundbreaking security analysis there, Cisco.
They’ve reset passwords for affected accounts (eventually), and are telling everyone to be extra vigilant about phishing attempts. Because *obviously* that’s going to fix everything. They claim no critical systems were compromised, but honestly, who the hell believes them? It’s always “no critical systems” until it is.
Basically, if you have a ciscocom.com account, change your damn password. And maybe consider using a password manager, because relying on Cisco to keep your data safe is like trusting a ferret with nuclear launch codes. Don’t be an idiot.
Seriously, I’m starting to think their security team just throws darts at a board of vulnerabilities and hopes for the best.
Speaking of breaches, I once had to clean up after a sysadmin who used “password” as his root password on a critical server. Password. The guy was genuinely surprised when it got hacked. Some people shouldn’t be allowed near computers, let alone responsible for their security. It’s infuriating.
