Ransomware plunges insurance company into bankruptcy

Seriously?! Another One Bites the Dust

You Won’t *Believe* This. (Actually, You Probably Will.)

Oh, joy. Another goddamn insurance company, QBE European Partners, has gone tits up thanks to ransomware. Apparently, they didn’t think spending a few bucks on decent security was worth it. Shocking, I tell ya, *shocking*.

The gist? A bunch of cybercriminals – because apparently there aren’t enough legitimate ways to make a living these days – hit them with ransomware in 2023. They’re estimating losses north of $150 million USD. One hundred and fifty *million*. And what did QBE do? They tried to quietly absorb the cost, hoping nobody would notice. Spoiler alert: people noticed.

Now they’re in administration (fancy talk for “bankrupt”), leaving policyholders scrambling and proving once again that if you don’t take cybersecurity seriously, you *will* pay the price. And it won’t be with a reasonable premium increase; it’ll be with your entire fucking business collapsing.

The article highlights how this impacts the whole insurance market – premiums are going up (naturally), coverage is getting tighter, and everyone’s generally being a lot more paranoid. Good. Maybe now people will actually listen when someone suggests things like multi-factor authentication and regular backups. Though I seriously doubt it.

Honestly, the whole thing just reeks of incompetence. It’s not rocket science, people! Patch your systems, train your employees, and for the love of all that is holy, *back up your data*. Is that too much to ask?

And a little story for ya…

I once had to clean up after a “security expert” (and I use that term *very* loosely) decided it was a good idea to disable logging on a critical server “to improve performance.” Yeah, right. When the inevitable happened – and it did, faster than you can say “data breach” – they were scrambling like cockroaches when the lights came on. They thought hiding the problem would make it go away. It didn’t. Just like QBE thinking they could quietly eat a $150 million loss. Idiots, the lot of ’em.
