Seriously, Another One?!
Oh joy. Columbia University got pwned. Not a little tap on the wrist either – we’re talking nearly 870,000 people having their personal data potentially compromised. Students, applicants, employees… the whole damn lot. What did they expect to happen leaving that shit exposed? Probably thought magic fairies would protect it.
Apparently, some unauthorized access happened between April and September of this year. They’re blaming a “credential compromise” – which is fancy talk for “someone used a password that was about as secure as a wet noodle.” Names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers (because *of course*), student IDs… the works. They’ve got credit monitoring being offered, because throwing money at the problem always fixes things, right?
The investigation is ongoing, but honestly? I’m not holding my breath for anything resembling actual accountability. They’ll slap a band-aid on it, issue some pathetic apology, and then go back to pretending they have a clue about security. It’s always the same goddamn song and dance.
Don’t even *think* about reusing passwords, you idiots. And enable MFA wherever you can. Seriously. This isn’t rocket science.

Speaking of incompetence, I once had to deal with a university IT department that thought changing the default password on their firewall constituted “security.” The new password? “password123.” I swear. Some people just *want* to get hacked. It’s infuriating.
