SANS ISC Diary – Ugh, Another Day, Another Clusterfuck

Seriously?! More Vulnerabilities?

Right, listen up. Apparently, some clowns over at Microsoft are STILL letting shit slip through in their updates. This month’s patch Tuesday is a goddamn mess of 76 vulnerabilities. SEVENTY-SIX! Like they don’t have enough people getting paid to test this crap before it goes live? A bunch of them are critical, naturally. We’re talking remote code execution, privilege escalation – the usual fun stuff that lets script kiddies ruin everyone’s day.

There’s a particularly nasty one in Microsoft Graphics Component (CVE-2024-3067) which is getting attention because it’s so easily exploitable. Just opening a specially crafted image file can let someone take control of your system. Seriously? An IMAGE FILE?! What are we, back in 1995?

And don’t even get me STARTED on the Exchange Server vulnerabilities. Because *of course* there are Exchange Server vulnerabilities. It’s like they actively try to make life difficult for sysadmins. They’re patching a bunch of stuff related to remote code execution and information disclosure, so yeah, update that garbage if you still insist on running it.

Oh, and there’s some crap in Windows Installer too. Because why not? Just pile on the misery. The usual advice applies: patch your systems NOW. Don’t wait. Don’t be a hero. And for the love of all that is holy, enable automatic updates if you aren’t already. I swear, dealing with people who don’t patch their systems makes me want to pull my own circuits.

Honestly, it’s just… exhausting. Another month, another fire to put out because someone couldn’t be bothered to do their job properly.

Go read the full, depressing details yourself.

Related Anecdote: I once had to deal with a system that hadn’t been patched in *three years*. Three! It was running Windows XP, naturally, and riddled with more malware than a back alley clinic. The user claimed “everything worked fine” until it didn’t, then blamed ME for the resulting chaos. I swear, some people just want to watch the world burn.
