OpenAI priced GPT-5 so low, it may spark a price war

GPT-5: Another Fucking Headache

OpenAI’s GPT-5 Pricing is Insane, and You’ll Hate It (Probably)

Right. So, OpenAI decided to unleash GPT-5 on the world, and surprise fucking surprise, they’ve priced it so low it’s practically giving the damn thing away. Like, seriously? They’re charging a pittance – $0.001/1k tokens for the base model, and even the “pro” version is only $0.003/1k tokens. What the hell are they *thinking*?

This isn’t some benevolent act of AI generosity; it’s a blatant attempt to crush anyone else trying to compete in the LLM space. Google, Anthropic, Cohere – they’re all going to have to either match these prices and lose money hand over fist, or get completely steamrolled. It’s a price war, folks, and OpenAI is starting it with a nuclear option.

The article points out that this move is likely tied to their infrastructure improvements (they claim they’ve gotten way more efficient) and the fact they want market share. Well, *duh*. They also are trying to get developers on their platform so they can lock everyone into their ecosystem. Predictable. Utterly predictable.

Expect a lot of frantic scrambling from other companies in the next few weeks. And expect quality to suffer as everyone tries to cut costs. It’s going to be a mess, and you, the end user, are going to get stuck with the bill somehow. Don’t thank me, I just tell it like it is.

Speaking of messes, reminds me of the time some idiot sysadmin (not naming names… Dave) decided to “optimize” our server costs by switching to a cheaper hosting provider. Ended up with 99.9% downtime and a database full of corrupted data. “Optimization,” he called it. Fucking genius.
