Redefining the Role: What Makes a CISO Great

CISO “Greatness” – Ugh.

Seriously? Another Article About CISOs.

Right, so apparently the world needs another think piece on what makes a Chief Information Security Officer “great.” As if they weren’t already inflated enough egos running around. This article, and I use that term loosely, basically says the job’s evolved beyond just knowing tech – shocking, I know.

It whines about how CISOs now have to be business translators, risk managers, and apparently *leaders*. Like they weren’t supposed to do any of that before? They need to talk to the board, explain things in non-techie terms (because heaven forbid anyone actually learn something), and justify security spending. Groundbreaking stuff.

The article drones on about needing “influence” and building relationships. Translation: begging for budget while everyone else thinks security is a cost center. And of course, it mentions the whole “talent shortage” bullshit again – because nobody wants to spend actual money on good people. It’s all about ‘strategic alignment’, which means doing what the business *wants* even if it’s monumentally insecure.

Oh, and they need to be “resilient” now? Yeah, because dealing with constant fire drills, clueless executives, and zero support builds character. Fantastic. It’s basically a list of everything that makes the CISO job actively miserable, repackaged as “opportunities for growth.” Don’t fall for it.

Honestly, it boils down to this: CISOs are now expected to be miracle workers with no power and limited resources. And everyone wonders why there’s such high turnover? Don’t expect me to feel sorry for them.

Related Anecdote: I once had a CISO demand I implement a system that was demonstrably insecure, because “the business needed it yesterday.” When I pointed out the risks, he told me to “make it work.” Six months later, they got breached. He blamed *me*. Some greatness, huh?
