U.S. Judiciary confirms breach of court electronic records service

Ugh, Another Breach

Seriously? The US Courts Got Hacked. Again.

Right, so the U.S. Judiciary just *had* to admit they got pwned. Apparently some miscreant(s) managed to compromise PACER – that godforsaken electronic records service everyone hates and pays a fortune for – sometime in early December. They’re not saying exactly what was stolen, just that “some” data was accessed without authorization. Fantastic. Just what we need, more sensitive court info floating around the dark web.

They’ve patched things up (supposedly), and are “working with” law enforcement. Oh joy. Expect a whole lot of hand-waving and vague assurances about “enhanced security measures.” Like that’ll actually mean anything. They claim no evidence of manipulation of court records, but honestly? I wouldn’t trust them to secure a rubber band, let alone critical infrastructure.

The worst part? This isn’t even new! PACER has been a security nightmare for years, and they just keep letting it rot. It’s like leaving the keys to Fort Knox under the doormat and then acting surprised when someone walks off with the gold. Idiots.

And of course, they’re being all tight-lipped about the specifics. Because transparency is *so* damaging to their image. Just another day in bureaucratic hell, I guess.

Speaking of court records, I once had to deal with a judge who insisted on faxing everything. Faxing. In 2015. When I pointed out the security risks, he told me “Paper doesn’t get hacked.” I swear, some people just want to watch the world burn. And then complain when it does.
