Connex Credit Union data breach impacts 172,000 members

Connex Credit Union: Another Fucking Breach

Seriously? Connex Credit Union Got Hacked. Again.

Oh, joy. Another financial institution couldn’t be bothered to secure its systems properly. Connex Credit Union is admitting a data breach affecting 172,000 members. What was stolen? Names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers – the *usual* goddamn stuff that makes identity theft so easy. They’re blaming a “credential stuffing” attack, which basically means some idiot reused passwords and now everyone’s screwed.

Apparently, this happened between February 23rd and March 7th of this year, but they only figured it out *now*. Fantastic security posture, guys. They’re offering credit monitoring (like that actually helps much after your SSN is floating around) and telling people to watch their accounts like hawks. Like anyone has time for that bullshit.

The worst part? They’ve notified law enforcement, which means absolutely nothing will come of it except a press release about how seriously they take security (they don’t). Expect phishing emails galore, and maybe some fraudulent charges if you’re unlucky. Honestly, I’m starting to think these companies *want* to get hacked so they can sell you “protection” services.

Don’t even bother calling them; their call centers are probably already swamped with panicked members. Just assume your data is compromised and move on. It’s the 21st century, what do you expect?

Speaking of incompetence, I once had to remotely fix a server room that was cooled by an open window and a box fan. The sysadmin thought “airflow” was a sufficient security measure. I swear, some people shouldn’t be allowed near computers, let alone entrusted with sensitive data. It’s infuriating.
