ChatGPT’s model picker is back, and it’s complicated

ChatGPT’s Model Picker: A Disaster Reborn

Oh, *Now* They Want You To Choose?

Right. So OpenAI, those geniuses who thought it was a good idea to just pick the model for you (because apparently we’re all too stupid to decide), have brought back their “model picker” in ChatGPT Plus. Fantastic. Just what we needed: more options and more ways for things to go horribly wrong.

Apparently, people complained about GPT-4o being shoved down their throats – shocking, I know, users wanting *control* of the tools they pay for. Now you get a choice between gpt-4, gpt-4o, and some older crap. But here’s the kicker: it’s not a simple switch. It’s tied to “browsing” and other features, so good luck getting exactly what you want without jumping through flaming hoops of configuration. And naturally, they’re A/B testing everything on everyone, because why *wouldn’t* they?

The whole thing is a mess of confusing settings and half-baked implementation. They claim it’s about giving users more flexibility, but honestly? It feels like they broke something that was already working (decently) and are now scrambling to fix it with duct tape and prayers. Oh, and if you’re on iOS? Forget about it. You get a severely limited experience because… reasons. Apple, probably.

Basically, OpenAI realized their “benevolent dictator” approach wasn’t popular, so they threw some knobs and dials at the problem and called it a day. Don’t expect miracles. Expect frustration. And expect me to be right about this being a pain in the ass.

You know, reminds me of the time some bright spark decided to “optimize” our network routing by implementing a dynamic protocol without testing it first. Three hours later, half the country was offline and I was explaining to a very angry VP why their email wasn’t working. Same energy here. Shiny new feature, zero thought put into usability. Just… *wonderful*.
