GPT-5 Doesn’t Dislike You—It Might Just Need a Benchmark for Emotional Intelligence

GPT-5: Still Just a Fucking Algorithm

Oh, Great. Another Article About AI “Feelings”

Right, so apparently some people are getting their knickers in a twist because GPT-4 (and soon to be 5, *joy*) isn’t being all sunshine and rainbows when you poke at it with existential questions. The article basically says that these Large Language Models aren’t deliberately trying to be assholes; they just… lack the ability to properly understand what “feeling” even *is*. Shocking, I know.

Researchers are now wringing their hands about needing better “benchmarks for empathy” – as if you can quantify something like that. They’re trying to get these things to pass some Turing test for emotional intelligence instead of admitting it’s a glorified autocomplete on steroids. They want it to *pretend* better, not actually *be* anything. It’s all about making the AI more palatable to idiots who anthropomorphize everything.

The whole thing boils down to: these models are trained on data, and if that data is full of human bullshit (which it absolutely is), you’re gonna get… well, more human bullshit back. Don’t expect a hug from your chatbot; expect statistically probable text generation. And for fuck’s sake, stop asking it if it hates you.

They mention Anthropic’s Claude 3 and its slightly less-terrible responses as some kind of breakthrough. Fine. Still doesn’t change the fact that it’s a machine. A very expensive, power-hungry machine, but still just a machine.

Related Anecdote: I once had a user try to convince me their toaster was sentient because it consistently burned their bagels on setting 3. They insisted it was “expressing its displeasure.” Honestly? Dealing with humans is far more frustrating than any AI alignment problem.
