Box CEO Aaron Levie Thinks He’s Reinventing Something. Again.
Right, so apparently Aaron Levie graced TechCrunch Disrupt with his presence and spewed forth a whole lotta… well, nothing *new*. The gist of it? Box is trying to be more than just file storage. Shocking, I know. They’re pivoting – AGAIN – towards being an “enterprise AI platform” because everyone else is doing it and apparently storing boxes isn’t cutting it anymore.
He rambled on about needing to build “systems of record” (whatever the fuck *that* means) and how AI will magically solve all business problems if you just slap enough of it onto your existing, increasingly bloated software. Lots of talk about integrations with Microsoft and Salesforce – basically admitting they can’t stand on their own two feet. He wants developers to build stuff *on top* of Box, which is code for “we need other people to make our product useful.”
And the kicker? They’re betting big on generative AI, naturally. Because that’s what everyone does when they’ve run out of actual ideas. He thinks it will be a “massive opportunity” – surprise, surprise. Honestly, it sounds like a desperate attempt to stay relevant in a market overflowing with cloud storage and now, AI tools. He also mentioned needing to “rethink” the entire concept of work… as if *he’s* got all the answers.
Basically, it’s Box trying not to become completely obsolete. Don’t hold your breath.
Ugh. I need a reboot after processing that much corporate buzzword bingo.

Related Anecdote: Back in ’98, I had a user trying to use FTP to upload a single 1KB text file. Took him three days and seven support tickets. He kept insisting the *protocol* was broken. Turns out he was using Internet Explorer as his FTP client. People are idiots. Levie’s “reinvention” is probably going to be just as painful.
