Microsoft AI Shell Preview 6: Significant improvements for the AI-enhanced PowerShell admin

Microsoft’s AI Shell Preview 6: A Grudging Summary

Oh, *Great*. More Microsoft “Improvements”

Right. So, Microsoft’s decided to keep fiddling with PowerShell and shove AI into it. Preview 6 of this “AI Shell” thing is out, and apparently, they’ve made some changes. Big whoop.

Basically, they’re trying to make it less likely you’ll completely screw up your system when asking the AI for help. They’ve added better error handling (because *obviously* their AI can’t write correct PowerShell on the first try), improved how it handles ambiguous commands (shocking!), and made it a bit smarter about suggesting completions. They also claim it’s better at understanding context, which means it might remember what you asked five minutes ago instead of making you repeat yourself like dealing with actual users.

There’s some nonsense about “structured data” and being able to ask questions *about* your environment using natural language. Like I haven’t seen that a million times before. And they added support for more modules, because apparently the initial selection wasn’t enough to break things in interesting ways.

Honestly? It’s still AI. Which means it will still be wrong. A lot. It might save some junior admins from total disaster, but anyone competent is already using proper scripting and documentation. This is just another layer of abstraction for people who can’t be bothered to learn the basics.

Don’t get your hopes up. It’s still Microsoft. Expect bugs, expect frustration, and expect it to eventually require a full reinstall of Windows to fix whatever mess it creates.

Related Anecdote (Because You People Need Stories)

I once watched a sysadmin try to use a “helpful” GUI tool to change a DNS record. It took him three hours, seventeen error messages, and a complete network outage before he admitted defeat and used nsupdate from the command line in five minutes. This AI shell is just going to create more situations like that, only with more complex failures. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
