State and Local Leaders Lobby Congress for Cybersecurity Resources

Seriously?! Another Plea For Help

You’ve Got To Be Fucking Kidding Me: States Begging Congress Again

Oh, joy. More whining from state and local governments about how they can’t defend themselves against cyberattacks. Apparently, running basic security isn’t a priority until *after* their systems get ransomed or data gets stolen. Now they’re trooping up to Capitol Hill, hat in hand, begging for more federal money and resources. Like Congress hasn’t got enough on its plate.

The National Governors Association (NGA) and the U.S. Conference of Mayors are pushing for increased funding for things like cybersecurity grants, workforce development (because finding qualified people is *so* hard, right?), and information sharing. They want a national cyber incident response plan – which should have been done years ago, frankly. And they’re complaining about the Shared Services model being too complicated to use. Seriously? Too complicated? Are we dealing with actual professionals here?

They’re also highlighting how critical infrastructure is constantly under attack and that local governments are often the weakest link. No shit, Sherlock. Everyone knows this. It’s like leaving the front door unlocked and then complaining when someone walks in and steals your TV. They want Congress to actually *listen* to their concerns (as if anyone cares about preventative measures) and streamline the process for getting help. Expect a lot of empty promises and bureaucratic bullshit, as usual.

Basically, it’s another round of “we’re too incompetent to handle this ourselves, please fix our problems.” Don’t hold your breath waiting for anything useful to happen.

Anecdote: I once had to rebuild a city’s entire network because their “IT guy” thought changing the default passwords on routers was optional. Optional! They were lucky it wasn’t ransomware, but they got pwned by some script kiddie anyway. And *they* wanted me to feel bad about pointing out how utterly pathetic their security posture was? Get a grip.
