Microsoft Teams to protect against malicious URLs, dangerous file types

Microsoft Teams Finally Doing Something Useful (Maybe)

Seriously? Microsoft Teams is *Now* Trying to Stop Malware?

Oh, joy. After years of being a festering pit of phishing links and dodgy files, Microsoft is finally getting around to adding some actual security features to Teams. Apparently, they’re rolling out “Block malicious URLs” and “Dangerous file type blocking.” Shocking, I tell you. Shocking.

What does this mean? Well, it’s supposed to stop users from clicking on links that lead to known badness (phishing sites, malware distribution, the usual crap) and block files like .exe, .dll, and other things a sane person wouldn’t be opening in Teams anyway. They’re using Microsoft Defender for more of this, because *of course* they are. It’s all about pushing you into their ecosystem, isn’t it?

It’s rolling out to GCC High/Gov clouds first (because security is important… there), then to everyone else. Expect the usual rollout delays and “it works for some people” nonsense. And don’t expect miracles; this won’t fix the fact that Teams is fundamentally a terrible platform for secure communication, but it’s a start, I guess. A pathetic, late-in-the-game start.

They also added some stuff about scanning attachments *before* they get downloaded. Like, what were they doing before? Just hoping for the best? Honestly, don’t hold your breath; this is Microsoft we’re talking about. There will be bugs. There will be bypasses. There will be frustration.

Anecdote: I once had to rebuild an entire network because some idiot clicked a link in AOL Instant Messenger back in ’98. AOL! Teams is slightly more sophisticated, but people are still idiots. This won’t change that. It just means the malware authors will have to work a little harder. And *I* get to deal with the fallout when it inevitably fails.
