Scattered Spider Hacker Gets 10 Years, $13M Restitution for SIM Swapping Crypto Theft

Ugh. Another One.

Seriously? Ten Years For *This*?

Right, so some dipshit from Scattered Spider – a bunch of script kiddies who couldn’t code their way out of a wet paper bag, probably – finally got 10 years in the slammer. Apparently, this loser, Denis Puzhkov, was running around SIM-swapping people to steal crypto. Crypto! Like that’s not predictable enough already. He and his little gang targeted over 50 victims, making off with a pathetic $13 million. Pathetic.

The FBI caught him in Latvia (good riddance), and now he’s gotta pay back the money *and* spend a decade thinking about his life choices. They also managed to tie him to other attacks – because, surprise, criminals tend to repeat themselves. The whole thing was a mess of phishing emails, social engineering, and generally being a nuisance.

Honestly, ten years feels… generous. Should’ve been longer. And the restitution better actually *happen*. I’m not holding my breath. The justice system is too busy worrying about important things like regulating cat videos to properly deal with these lowlifes.

Don’t even get me started on the fact that people are still falling for this crap in 2025. Seriously, change your damn passwords and enable MFA! It’s not rocket science!

Speaking of idiots… I once had a sysadmin who thought putting a sticky note with the root password on his monitor was “secure.” I swear to all that is holy. Ten years in jail seems like a vacation compared to what *I* wanted to do to him.
