Seriously? Tree of AST. Just What We Needed.
Right, so some bright sparks have decided that Large Language Models (LLMs) are the answer to finding bugs in code. Groundbreaking. Apparently, they’ve built a framework called “Tree of AST” – because naming things descriptively is *hard* – that uses LLMs to generate test cases by…wait for it…analyzing the Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) of code. Like we haven’t been doing that manually for decades?
The basic idea, if you can stomach it, is to feed an AST into an LLM, have it spit out potential vulnerabilities based on what it *thinks* might be wrong, then refine those suggestions iteratively. They’re touting better results than fuzzing and other automated tools in some cases – surprise, surprise. It’s all about prompting the LLM correctly, naturally. Because a pile of silicon needs hand-holding to do basic code analysis.
They tested it on Python, JavaScript, and Go (because those are the only languages that matter, apparently). It’s open source, so go ahead, waste your time trying to get it working in *your* environment. It’ll probably require a PhD in prompt engineering just to make it not hallucinate wildly.
Honestly, it feels like another layer of abstraction on top of problems we already had solutions for. But hey, venture capital needs to be burned, and security theater is always in demand. Don’t expect this to replace actual skilled bug hunters anytime soon, but prepare for a lot of noise.
