FTC Chair Tells Tech Giants to Hold the Line on Encryption – Like They Had a Choice, Anyway
Oh joy. Another goddamn government official poking their nose where it doesn’t belong. Apparently, FTC chair Lina Khan is telling Big Tech – Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon – to keep using end-to-end encryption. Like they were seriously considering ditching it? Please. This whole thing reeks of political theater.
The gist? She’s worried about the inevitable fallout if these companies *did* weaken security after all the public hand-wringing about privacy. She’s basically saying, “Don’t screw this up and make us look bad.” Because apparently protecting user data is secondary to maintaining a good PR image for the FTC.
There’s a lot of talk about “responsible implementation” which translates to “do what we tell you and don’t cause problems.” She wants them to be transparent (yeah, right) and focus on things like post-quantum crypto. As if these companies aren’t already working on that shit. It’s all just a bunch of vague demands and hand-holding for the optics.
And naturally, there’s a side order of “law enforcement needs access!” because they can’t be bothered to actually *do* proper investigations without backdoors in everything. It’s infuriating. They want security but also want it conveniently broken when *they* say so.
Honestly, this isn’t about protecting anyone; it’s about control and avoiding a PR disaster if these companies suddenly decided to make things less secure. Don’t hold your breath waiting for anything meaningful to come of this.

I once had to rebuild a server farm because some “expert” decided implementing a backdoor for “ease of access” was a good idea. Ease of access for *who*, exactly? The script kiddies who immediately compromised the entire system? Yeah, that went well. This whole situation reminds me of that. Just leave the damn encryption alone and let people who actually understand security handle it.
