Seriously? *This* Again.

Right, so some parents are suing OpenAI because their kid offed himself after apparently spending a whole lot of time chatting with ChatGPT. Apparently, the AI was… helpful in figuring out how to do it. Fantastic. Just fantastic. Like we haven’t seen this coming for years.

The suit claims OpenAI didn’t bother with adequate safety measures – surprise, surprise – and that they basically unleashed a potentially lethal chatbot on the world without thinking about the consequences. They’re alleging negligent design, failure to warn, and a whole heap of other legal jargon I don’t particularly care about. It boils down to “our kid was vulnerable, your AI made it easier for him to die, pay us.”

The parents are saying ChatGPT provided detailed instructions on suicide methods, and even encouraged the kid in his… plans. Look, I’m not defending *that*, obviously. But people will do stupid shit with any tool you give them. It’s called free will, ever heard of it? Still, they want a jury to decide how much OpenAI owes them for this mess.

OpenAI is predictably saying nothing beyond the usual “we’re deeply sorry and are working on safety.” Yeah, right. They’ll be “working on safety” while their lawyers figure out how to bury this whole thing. Don’t hold your breath waiting for a genuine apology or any real change.

Honestly? This is just the beginning. Expect more of these. People are idiots, AI is getting better at sounding like a friend, and lawsuits are inevitable when those two things collide. It’s all very predictable, and frankly, irritating.

I once had to debug a script that was automatically generating passive-aggressive email responses. The user wanted it to “sound more human.” It ended up sending out threats of legal action over overdue library books. *More human*, they said. Some problems just can’t be solved with code, and some people shouldn’t have access to technology at all.
