Oh, Great. Another Microsoft Clusterfuck.
Right, so Microsoft’s finally deigned to acknowledge the screaming hordes reporting their SSDs taking a dirt nap after installing KB5063878. And what do they say? It’s not the update. Of course it isn’t. It’s “incompatible hardware” or some other vague, hand-waving bullshit. They claim the issue only affects specific configurations and that TRIM is the culprit – or lack thereof. Basically, if your drive wasn’t set up *perfectly* before you installed their garbage update, it’s your fault when it croaks.
They’ve released a tool to check for problematic drives (because apparently users can’t be trusted to know what they have) and are now blaming drive manufacturers for not properly reporting capabilities. Seriously? It’s always someone else’s problem, isn’t it? They push out buggy code, break things, then blame the hardware or the user. Fantastic.
They’re also saying that the reported write amplification issues are “within normal parameters”. Normal for what, Microsoft? For drives actively dying?! Don’t even get me started on the fact they initially downplayed everything and now pretend this isn’t a widespread issue. Just…unbelievable.
So yeah, if your SSD is acting up after that update, Microsoft says it’s probably you. Go figure.
Read the official Microsoft denial here (if you dare).

I once had a sysadmin tell me that “Windows Updates are always good.” He’s now happily employed at a coffee shop. Coincidence? I think not. Drives failing after updates is as predictable as Microsoft screwing something up.
