OpenAI is testing “Thinking effort” for ChatGPT

Oh, *Now* They Care About Quality?

OpenAI’s “Thinking Effort” – Seriously?

Right. So, after unleashing a chatbot that hallucinates more than a desert trip on bad acid, OpenAI’s decided they need to make ChatGPT… *think harder* before spewing garbage? Apparently, they’re testing a new system called “thinking effort” where the AI supposedly evaluates how much cognitive juice it needs to answer your question. More “effort” means longer response times, but allegedly better answers. Like that’ll fix the fundamental problem of it being a glorified autocomplete on steroids.

They’re rolling this out to select users (lucky bastards) and are using some internal metric – surprise, surprise – to gauge how complex a query is. It’s all about reducing “low-quality” responses and making the thing less prone to just vomiting up whatever sounds plausible. Because *now* they’re worried about accuracy? After months of letting it run wild?

And naturally, this means slower response times for everyone. Fantastic. Just what we needed – a chatbot that takes even longer to confidently lie to us. They’re trying to make it more “reliable” by making it *slower*. I swear, these people are actively working against usability.

They claim this is about improving the model and understanding its limitations. Bullshit. It’s damage control after everyone realized ChatGPT is a fancy parlor trick with a serious fact-checking problem. Don’t hold your breath waiting for perfection; it’ll probably just learn to *sound* more convincing while still being completely wrong.

Speaking of “thinking effort,” I once had to debug a routing issue caused by a misconfigured BGP neighbor that was advertising a /24 with the wrong AS path. Took me three days, seventeen cups of coffee, and a healthy dose of profanity to figure out it was a single typo in a config file. This AI is getting praised for *trying* to think? Give me a break.
