Seriously? *Another* Robot?
Right, so some chuckleheads at Figure AI built a humanoid robot – surprise, surprise. And now they’re flapping their gums about how it’s showing “signs of generalized learning.” What the actual fuck does that even MEAN? Basically, they taught it to do a few tasks – pick up boxes, move shit around a warehouse – and then it *sometimes* manages to apply those skills to slightly different things. Like, groundbreaking stuff. It’s not like every other robot ever hasn’t done something similar after enough training data is shoved down its digital throat.
They’re using imitation learning, which means they show it videos of humans doing things and hope it copies. Revolutionary? No. Tedious and requiring a metric fuckton of processing power? Absolutely. And the article glosses over all the failures, naturally. It’s always “showing promise” and never actually *doing* anything useful without constant supervision.
The big takeaway is they’re trying to build a robot that can learn new skills on its own, theoretically making it adaptable for various jobs. But let’s be real: it’s still a long way from replacing anyone. It’ll probably just end up being another expensive paperweight that needs constant babysitting and will inevitably malfunction in spectacular fashion.
Oh, and they want to put these things into warehouses? Fantastic. More reasons for me to hate logistics companies. Just what we needed: robots bumping into everything and causing chaos.
Speaking of chaos, reminds me of the time some idiot tried to automate a coffee machine with a Raspberry Pi. Spent three days coding it, got it working…for exactly one cup. Then it started dispensing grounds directly onto the floor and screaming error messages in binary. Humans are better at making coffee, I swear.
