US sues robot toy maker for exposing children’s data to Chinese devs

Seriously?! Another One…

U.S. Sues Toy Maker – Because Apparently, Common Sense is Dead

Oh, for the love of all that is holy… The FTC is suing a company called Miko Interactive over their “Miko” robots. These little bastards are supposed to be interactive toys for kids, but surprise, surprise! They were sending children’s personal data – audio recordings, location info, *everything* – straight back to servers in China. Yeah, that’s right. CHINA.

Apparently, Miko didn’t bother with proper security measures or getting parental consent like they should have. The FTC claims they were violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and just generally being irresponsible assholes. They also allegedly lied about how secure the data was. Lied! Can you believe the audacity?

The lawsuit wants them to stop collecting and using the data, delete what they already have, and pay a hefty fine. Honestly, it should be *more* than a fine. It’s not like this is some new revelation; everyone knows sending kid’s info overseas is a terrible idea. It’s just… infuriating.

And the worst part? They were advertising how “safe” these things were for kids. Marketing lies, data breaches, Chinese servers… what could possibly go wrong?

Related Anecdote: Back in ’98, some idiot thought it was a good idea to let a junior dev directly access the production database. “Just for testing!” he said. Testing what? How quickly you can lose millions of customer records? Took me three days and a whole lot of caffeine to clean up that mess. People never learn. Never.
