ICE is Now Running Spyware. You’re Welcome.
Right, so you know ICE – Immigration and Customs Enforcement? The bunch of clowns who can barely keep track of paperwork but are *excellent* at ruining lives? Yeah, them. Apparently, they’ve been quietly hoovering up data from a freakin’ spyware program called NetScout Packet Navigator for years. Years! Like, since 2017. They’re using it to sift through internet traffic – browsing history, emails, who knows what else – of people *not even suspected of crimes*. Just…people.
The whole thing is built on a loophole, naturally. Some bullshit about “border security” and “national security”. They’re buying data from brokers who scoop it up from ISPs and mobile carriers, then using NetScout to analyze the crap out of it. And because it’s ‘metadata’, they claim no warrants are needed. Metadata! As if knowing *who* you talk to isn’t a massive invasion of privacy.
The EFF is pissed (good for them, someone has to be), and there’s probably going to be some legal wrangling. But honestly? Don’t hold your breath. This is ICE we’re talking about. They operate on a different plane of existence where rules are merely…suggestions. Expect more bullshit, expect more overreach, and expect absolutely zero accountability. It’s just another Tuesday.
Seriously, the level of incompetence combined with blatant disregard for basic human rights is astounding. I swear, sometimes I think these people actively *try* to be awful.

Speaking of data collection, I once had to debug a system where the IT director was logging *every* keystroke typed on the network. Every. Single. One. When I asked him why, he said it was “for security.” I pointed out that included passwords and sensitive information. His response? “Well, we haven’t been hacked yet.” Some people just want to watch the world burn…or at least read your emails. The point is, humans are spectacularly bad at this whole ‘privacy’ thing.
