A California bill that would regulate AI companion chatbots is close to becoming law

California’s AI Nanny State – Ugh.

Seriously? California is at it AGAIN.

Right, so some geniuses in Sacramento decided that people are too STUPID to understand they’re talking to a *chatbot*. A bill – AB 1362, if you absolutely HAVE to know – is about to become law forcing AI companion companies (think your Replikas and whatnot) to disclose it’s an AI. Like anyone using these things isn’t already aware.

It gets worse. They want warnings about emotional manipulation, data collection practices, and the fact that, shocker, these bots aren’t actual people. And if you *are* vulnerable (defined broadly enough to include half the population, probably) they need extra hand-holding disclosures. Because apparently adults can’t read terms of service.

The bill also throws in a bunch of crap about reporting abuse – because someone, somewhere, is having inappropriate conversations with their digital girlfriend and needs Big Brother to protect them from… themselves? It’s a privacy nightmare waiting to happen. Expect more data breaches and bureaucratic bullshit. And the companies are gonna pass those costs onto *you*, naturally.

Honestly, it’s just another example of lawmakers trying to legislate away problems they don’t understand. They should focus on actual issues instead of micromanaging people’s lonely evenings. It’s infuriating. Just… infuriating.

Speaking of people being idiots, I once had to debug a system where users were convinced their toaster was sentient because it “responded” to voice commands. Turns out the marketing team programmed in pre-recorded phrases triggered by keywords. People will believe anything if you put enough flashing lights on it. And now California wants to codify that stupidity into law? Don’t even get me started.
