Oh, *Now* They Care? FTC Investigates AI Companions.

Right, so the goddamn Federal Trade Commission – those paragons of proactive regulation – have finally decided to poke their noses into the steaming pile that is AI chatbot “companions” from Meta (obviously), OpenAI, Anthropic, and a few other chuckleheads. Apparently, they’re worried about data privacy, security, and whether these things are just sophisticated manipulation machines designed to extract every last drop of personal info before selling it off or just plain lying to people.

No shit, Sherlock. Everyone with half a brain already figured that out when Meta started pushing Llama 3 as your new best friend. They want answers about how these companies are handling user data (because they *will* be handling it), what safeguards are in place (there aren’t any good ones), and if they’re being upfront about the limitations of these bots (they absolutely aren’t). They even asked about potential risks to kids, which is just… wow. It took them this long?

Basically, it’s a bunch of strongly worded letters asking questions that should have been answered *before* unleashing these digital parasites on the public. Expect a lot of carefully crafted PR responses and absolutely zero actual change until something truly catastrophic happens. Don’t hold your breath waiting for accountability.

And yes, they’re looking at those creepy voice clones too. Because apparently letting AI mimic your loved ones is totally fine until it isn’t. Fantastic.
