Google now lets you share your custom Gemini AI assistants known as Gems

Google’s Latest Clusterfuck: Gems, Apparently

Oh, *Great*. More AI Shit.

Right, so Google’s decided that what the world really needs is for every idiot with a Gemini account to inflict their half-baked “AI assistants” – they’re calling them “Gems,” because apparently everything has to have a cutesy name now – on everyone else. They’ve opened up sharing, meaning you can now distribute these things like digital plagues.

Basically, if you’ve wasted your time building some bespoke chatbot that helps you write terrible poetry or plan imaginary vacations, you can now unleash it upon the unsuspecting public. And of course, Google is framing this as “empowerment” and a way to “unlock creativity.” Yeah, right. More like unlock a flood of useless crap clogging up their platform.

They’ve got some ‘safety features’, naturally – because letting people share AI creations without *any* oversight would be just too sensible. It’s all moderated and has ratings, but let’s be real, that’ll last about five minutes before the dumpster fire starts. There’s a marketplace too, so you can probably find gems for doing things you shouldn’t need an AI to do.

And because it wouldn’t be Google without monetization, they’re hinting at ways creators will eventually make money off this garbage. Fantastic. Just what we needed: more people incentivized to create low-effort AI tools. Seriously, I’m starting to think Skynet was a good idea.

Don’t ask me why anyone would *want* this. It’s just… ugh. Another layer of pointless complexity and potential for disaster. Go back to coding something useful, people!

Speaking of disasters, I once had a user try to build an AI assistant to “optimize their cat’s napping schedule.” Seriously. It involved sensors, data analysis, and a frankly disturbing amount of purr-to-text conversion. The whole thing crashed the server three times and resulted in a very angry feline. Don’t even get me started on the debugging process. This Gems thing feels like that, but scaled up to an existential threat.
