Oh, *Now* They Want to Be Useful?
Right. So Notion, that glorified digital notepad people inexplicably love, has decided it wants to be… an automation platform? Seriously? After years of being a pretty interface for lists and vaguely organized thoughts, they’re launching “Agents.” These Agents are basically glorified scripts that can pull data from connected apps (like Google Sheets, obviously) and do things like analyze sales figures or build project timelines. They’ve even got some AI fluff thrown in to “understand” your requests – because apparently humans haven’t been able to clearly articulate what they want for centuries.
They’re calling it “Notion Agents,” which is about as original a name as “The Internet.” It’s all integrated within Notion, naturally, so you don’t have to *gasp* leave their ecosystem. They’ve got some pre-built templates for common tasks and an API if you’re one of the sad souls who wants to build your own (because clearly their built-in stuff isn’t enough). And, because everything is a subscription these days, it’s going to cost extra. Of course it is.
Basically, they’re trying to catch up with everyone else who’s been doing this for years. Zapier and IFTTT are probably laughing their asses off right now. Don’t get me wrong, if it works, fine. But don’t expect miracles. It’s still Notion, which means it will inevitably be slightly too precious and require 17 steps to accomplish something simple.
Honestly, the whole thing smells like a desperate attempt to justify their valuation. But hey, more power to ’em, I guess. Just don’t come crying to me when your automated sales report is formatted in Comic Sans.

Speaking of automation, I once had a user try to automate the entire server room using nothing but Excel macros and a Raspberry Pi. It ended with a power outage that took down three data centers and a very stern talking-to from my superiors. The audacity of some people…
