SonicWall Breached, Firewall Backup Data Exposed

SonicWall? More Like SonicFAIL.

Seriously?! Another One. SonicWall Got Pwned.

Oh joy. SonicWall, yes that SonicWall – the security company that’s supposed to be *preventing* this shit – got their firewall backups compromised. Apparently some miscreant(s) managed to get into a system and pilfer data related to configurations. Like, actual customer configs. Fantastic.

What does this mean? Well, if you’re running one of their firewalls, especially older models, you should probably be changing your passwords right now. And I don’t mean the weak “password123” crap either. They’re saying it *could* allow attackers to impersonate legitimate devices or just generally cause chaos on networks. Because that’s what we all need right now, more fucking chaos.

The details are predictably vague – “limited number of customers” affected, blah blah blah. They claim they patched the vulnerability (after it was already exploited, naturally) and are working with law enforcement. Sure you are. Look, this isn’t some script kiddie operation; this looks like a targeted attack, probably state-sponsored or at least well-funded. And SonicWall is trying to downplay it.

Honestly, the whole thing reeks of incompetence. Backups should be secured better than Fort Knox, not left lying around for anyone with half a brain and a network connection to grab. I swear, sometimes I think these security companies are actively *trying* to give hackers free access passes.

Don’t expect any real transparency from them either. They’ll tell you just enough to avoid lawsuits while leaving you scrambling in the dark. You’ve been warned. Go change your passwords and pray.

Speaking of backups… I once had a sysadmin who thought backing up the server meant copying the entire /home directory to a flash drive. A single flash drive. No redundancy, no encryption, just… that. He lost it during a company picnic. Seriously. The level of stupidity is breathtaking sometimes. Makes SonicWall look almost competent.
