Why California’s SB 53 might provide a meaningful check on big AI companies

SB-53: Another Fucking Headache

Seriously? California’s Trying to Regulate AI.

Oh, joy. As if we didn’t have enough bureaucratic bullshit clogging the pipes, California decided it needs to “check” Big AI. Senate Bill 53 (SB-53) is this steaming pile of legislation that basically forces large AI companies – you know, the ones actually *doing* things – to publicly disclose a whole load of crap about their models. Think training data, capabilities, limitations…the stuff they don’t WANT anyone knowing.

The gist? It’s trying to make these companies be more transparent about what their black boxes are doing and how dangerous they might be. Supposedly it will help with things like identifying bias and preventing misuse. Right. Like *that* will stop someone determined to cause trouble. It’ll just mean a lot of pointless paperwork and lawyers getting rich.

The real kicker is the enforcement mechanism. A new state agency, the California AI Safety Agency (CASA), is being created. Because what we really need is *another* government agency. They’re hoping to hit these companies with fines if they don’t comply. Fines that will be paid out of petty cash for these giants, I guarantee it.

It’s not perfect – the definition of “large AI company” is kinda vague and there are loopholes big enough to drive a truck through. But, and this pains me to admit, it *might* actually force some accountability. Or at least make them hire more PR people to spin things. Don’t hold your breath.

Honestly, the whole thing feels like trying to stop a tsunami with a sandcastle. But hey, maybe, just maybe, it’ll slow down the inevitable AI apocalypse by five minutes. Don’t count on it though.

Speaking of pointless regulation, I once had to spend three days reconfiguring a routing table because some pencil-pusher decided we needed to adhere to a new RFC that was demonstrably worse than the old one. Three days! I could have automated half the internet in that time. The sheer incompetence…it still keeps me up at night.
