Seriously? More Microsoft Bullshit.
Oh, surprise. Microsoft’s latest updates – because they apparently can’t test anything before shoving it down our throats – are royally fucking up DRM video playback on Windows 10 and 11. Yeah, that’s right. You paid for your movies/shows/whatever, and now you might not be able to *watch* them because of Microsoft’s incompetence.
Specifically, it seems like the updates are breaking things for apps using PlayReady (a DRM tech), meaning Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and a whole bunch of other streaming services are potentially affected. They’ve acknowledged it – after people started screaming, naturally – and are promising fixes “soon.” “Soon” in Microsoft time could mean anything from tomorrow to never.
The “fix” they’re suggesting now? Run the troubleshooter. A *troubleshooter*. Because that always works perfectly, right? And if that doesn’t work, well… good luck, I guess. They also mention some codec pack issues, so maybe you need to reinstall stuff because Microsoft broke it in the first place.
Honestly, this is just par for the course. They push out garbage updates, break things, then tell us to fix *their* mess. It’s infuriating. Don’t even get me started on the whole forced update thing…
Related Anecdote: Back in ’98, I was managing a network of Sun workstations (yes, *real* machines). A Microsoft update – surprise! – bricked the NFS client on half the fleet. Spent three days rebuilding those things because their “fix” involved rewriting parts of the kernel. Three days. And you think your streaming issues are bad? Pathetic.
