Right, so apparently a bunch of “experts” gathered at TechCrunch Disrupt to wring their hands about how AI is going to “change” hiring. Shocking. Absolutely fucking shocking. Basically, the gist – and try to keep up, because this is complex for you lot – is that *skills* are now supposedly more important than degrees. Like, duh. Been saying that for decades, but NOW it’s news because a chatbot can write a resume.
They bleat on about how companies are using AI to screen candidates, focusing on “potential” and “aptitude” instead of fancy paper. Which means more automated rejection emails for everyone, naturally. And surprise, surprise, soft skills are HUGE now. Because robots can’t do empathy (yet), so you need people who can… *feel* things while being managed by algorithms? Fantastic.
There’s a lot of talk about “micro-credentials” and bootcamps – basically paying to prove you know something an AI could learn in five minutes. And the whole thing is geared towards finding people who can build, maintain, and *babysit* these goddamn AI systems. So if you’re not a prompt engineer or data scientist, prepare to be irrelevant.
Oh, and diversity? They mentioned it. Briefly. Because acknowledging systemic issues while simultaneously automating bias is just… peak corporate hypocrisy. The whole thing boils down to: AI will hire people who can make *more* AI, and everyone else can fight over the scraps. Don’t expect a fair shake.
Honestly, it’s all just another way for companies to cut costs and pretend they care about something other than profit margins. Don’t bother with a fancy education; just learn how to appease the machine gods. You’ve been warned.
Speaking of automated systems… I once had to debug a payroll system that was consistently shorting people’s paychecks by exactly $3.14.
