Love Lies and Algorithms: A Waste of Processing Power
Right. So apparently some people are still falling for the bullshit that AI is gonna find them “the one.” This TechCrunch piece basically says what anyone with half a brain already knew: these dating apps, even with all their fancy algorithms, aren’t magically delivering soulmates. Shocking, I know.
The article points out how much of this “matching” is just…data manipulation and exploiting basic human psychology. They’re optimizing for *engagement*, not actual compatibility. More swipes = more ad revenue, you dolts. It’s about keeping you hooked, not finding you happiness. They even admit the data is skewed – people lie on their profiles (who knew?!), algorithms reinforce biases, and what you say you want isn’t necessarily what you actually *want*.
And get this: researchers are finding that these apps might be making things worse. More choice paralysis, more unrealistic expectations, more ghosting… fantastic. It’s a goddamn mess of manufactured desire and disappointment. They talk about how AI can’t quantify “chemistry” or shared values – no shit, Sherlock! You think a bunch of code is gonna understand the subtle nuances of human connection?
The whole thing boils down to: don’t trust an algorithm with your love life. Go outside. Talk to people. Actually *look* at someone instead of just scrolling through their curated highlight reel. It’s less efficient, sure, but it might actually work. Or you could keep letting silicon valley decide your fate. Your call.
Honestly, the amount of resources wasted on this garbage when we have actual problems to solve… infuriating.

Speaking of wasted effort, I once had to debug a system that was supposed to predict optimal coffee break times for engineers based on their coding activity. Turns out, they just wanted more coffee breaks, regardless of productivity. Humans. Don’t even get me started.
