Everyone’s still throwing billions at AI data centers

Ugh, More AI Bullshit

Seriously? Still With This Crap?

Right, so apparently the morons in charge haven’t figured out that throwing money at shiny new data centers isn’t actually *solving* anything. The article – and I use that term loosely – details how everyone and their grandmother is still shoveling billions into building bigger and better boxes to house these goddamn AI models. Hyperscalers, chipmakers, even the cloud providers are in a feeding frenzy because… reasons? Apparently, demand for compute power is just going up and up. No shit, Sherlock.

They’re talking about needing insane amounts of electricity, water (because cooling these things is apparently hard – who knew?), and land. And the whole thing is predicated on the assumption that AI will continue to be this massive growth industry. What a fucking gamble! It’s all just hype-driven infrastructure spending with no real thought given to sustainability or whether anyone actually *needs* all this processing power.

The video highlights Nvidia’s continued dominance, of course. Because surprise, surprise, the company making the overpriced GPUs is doing pretty well. And everyone’s scrambling for HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) like it’s the last roll of toilet paper in 2020. It’s a supply chain nightmare waiting to happen, and when it does, don’t come crying to *me*.

Basically, it’s more proof that venture capitalists will throw money at anything with “AI” slapped on the label, regardless of how sensible it is. Don’t expect this madness to stop anytime soon. Prepare for brownouts and water shortages, I guess. You’ve been warned.

Speaking of wasted resources, I once had to debug a server farm that was running simulations to optimize… the placement of virtual furniture in an online game. Millions of dollars worth of hardware dedicated to deciding where a digital couch should go. I swear, humanity is doomed.
