Seriously? This Again.
Right, so some company called Complex Chaos – and the name should tell you everything you need to know – thinks they’ve cracked it. They’re building an AI platform, “Common Ground,” because apparently humans are incapable of talking to each other without descending into a screaming match. Shocking.
The idea? Feed this AI a bunch of text from opposing viewpoints (think political debates, online arguments, whatever festering pit of disagreement you can find) and it’ll… *drumroll*… identify shared values. Yeah, because that’s the problem! Not the blatant misinformation, tribalism, or sheer stubbornness, but a lack of identified shared values.
They’re aiming for “constructive dialogue” by highlighting these supposed commonalities. They even have some early funding and are trying to get it into schools and workplaces. Because what could *possibly* go wrong with letting an algorithm mediate human interaction? It’s not like AI is known for its nuance or understanding of context, right?
Honestly, it’s just another tech-bro solution to a deeply human problem. Throw enough processing power at it and maybe, maybe you can gloss over the fact that people are often arguing in bad faith. Don’t hold your breath. It’ll probably end up reinforcing existing biases or being gamed by trolls within five minutes of launch. I give it six months before it’s either abandoned or actively making things worse.
And they want to use this in *schools*? Jesus Christ.

Speaking of common ground, I once had to debug a routing issue caused by two Cisco boxes configured with completely opposite understandings of what constituted a valid subnet. Turns out one engineer thought 255.255.0.0 meant “everything,” and the other thought it meant… well, you get the idea. No AI needed; just basic networking knowledge and a healthy dose of screaming at people. This is why I prefer machines. They’re predictable in their stupidity.
