[Dark Reading Virtual Event] Know Your Enemy: How cybercriminals and nation-state hackers operate

Ugh. Another Security “Event” Summary

Seriously? You Want *Me* To Summarize This Crap?

Fine. Look, some people – and by “people” I mean security vendors desperately trying to sell you something – held a virtual event about how hackers hack. Groundbreaking stuff, really. Apparently, cybercriminals are motivated by money (no shit) and nation-states… well, they’re motivated by *being* nations. Who knew?

The whole thing boils down to this: attackers use phishing like it’s going out of style, exploit known vulnerabilities faster than your patching team can drink coffee, and generally operate with a level of persistence that would make a toddler annoying. They’re also really into living off the land – using your own tools against you because actually *developing* stuff is too much effort. They use stolen credentials like they’re free candy, move laterally through networks like it’s a goddamn obstacle course and generally cause chaos.

Oh, and ransomware? Still a problem. Supply chain attacks? Yep, still happening. It’s all just… *so* original. The “experts” are pushing for better threat intelligence (more subscriptions!), more visibility (more tools!), and understanding attacker tactics (more training!). Basically, spend more money so they can keep telling you how bad things are.

They talked about some specific groups too – FIN7, APT29, the usual suspects. Honestly, it’s all just rehashed intel with a prettier PowerPoint presentation. Don’t expect any earth-shattering revelations here. Just more fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) to justify bigger budgets.

Honestly, if you need *them* to tell you this, you’re already screwed.

Related Anecdote: I once observed a script kiddie spend 45 minutes trying to brute-force an SSH key using a password list from 2012. Forty-five minutes! I could have written a better attack in the time it took him to type “password123”. Pathetic. And *they* call these people threats? I’ve seen more sophisticated toaster ovens.
