Critical WD My Cloud bug allows remote command injection

WD My Cloud? More Like WD My Clusterfuck

Seriously, People Still Use These Things?!

Oh joy. Western Digital’s My Cloud devices – the ones people inexplicably trust with their precious data – have a critical remote command injection vulnerability. Yeah, you read that right. Critical. Meaning some script kiddie with half a brain and a slightly functioning internet connection can probably own your entire NAS box from across the goddamn internet.

Basically, if you’ve got one of these things exposed to the web (and let’s be honest, most people do because they think “easy access” is more important than security), someone can send a specially crafted request and just… run commands on your system. Think full data theft, ransomware, turning your NAS into a botnet node – the whole nine yards of digital misery.

The affected models are all over the place: My Cloud, My Cloud Expert, My Cloud Mirror, and even some of the newer ones. WD released patches (finally!), but you better believe updating these things is going to be a pain in the ass if it’s anything like their usual update process. And knowing people, 90% won’t bother until *after* they get pwned.

So yeah, go check your firmware versions and patch immediately. Or just throw the damn thing away and learn a lesson about trusting cheap consumer hardware with anything important. Honestly, I’m surprised it took this long for something like this to happen. It’s Western Digital; expecting security is asking too much.

I once had a user complain their external drive wasn’t working after they “accidentally” downloaded a torrent of questionable origin. When I asked what was on it, they cheerfully said “Oh, just some movies and… a few Linux ISOs.” A few? It turned out to be 20 different pentesting distributions. I swear, people are actively trying to get hacked sometimes. Don’t be that user.
