Opera launches its AI-centric Neon browser

Opera’s Neon… Seriously?

Oh, *Another* Browser. Fantastic.

Right, so Opera – yes, that Opera – decided the world desperately needs yet another browser. They’re calling it “Neon,” and surprise, surprise, it’s all about AI. Apparently, they think slapping an LLM onto everything is a good idea. Like we don’t have enough half-baked AI “features” clogging up perfectly functional software.

It’s got Aria, their built-in AI assistant, which does… stuff. Summarizing articles (like this one, ironically), generating images, explaining complex topics – basically everything every other browser is trying to do with extensions or integrations. They’ve also got a “Shape” feature that lets you highlight text and ask Aria questions about it. Groundbreaking. Truly.

And because nothing says “innovation” like copying everyone else, Neon has a sidebar for AI tools, a chat interface, and the ability to create custom prompts. It’s built on Extreme browser core (because Chrome is just *too* good) and they’re pushing it as being faster and more private. Yeah, right. We’ll see about that.

The whole thing feels like a desperate attempt to stay relevant. Honestly, who asked for this? Just fix your existing browser, Opera. Seriously. Stop wasting my cycles on this garbage.

I once had to debug a routing issue caused by someone insisting on implementing a “smart” DNS resolver. It was supposed to dynamically optimize connections based on latency. It ended up sending all traffic through a server in Uzbekistan. *Uzbekistan*. This AI browser thing feels exactly like that. A solution looking for a problem, and guaranteed to cause more headaches than it solves.
