California’s new AI safety law shows regulation and innovation don’t have to clash

California’s AI Clusterfuck – A Summary (Because I Have To)

Seriously? Another Fucking Law About AI.

Right, so California decided they needed to “regulate” AI. Shocking. Apparently, some politicians actually think they can *control* this stuff. The new law – AB 2869 – is supposed to be all about transparency and safety for “high-risk” AI systems. What constitutes ‘high risk’ is predictably vague, leaving it open to interpretation by lawyers and bureaucrats who know less than my toaster oven.

The gist? Companies building these things have to disclose training data (good luck with *that*), explain how the models work (as if anyone actually understands them fully), and show they’ve done some testing. It’s tiered, so smaller companies get a bit of a pass – because apparently crippling innovation is only acceptable in measured doses. They’re trying to avoid scaring off all the AI startups, which, frankly, is probably a losing battle anyway.

The article pathetically tries to spin this as proof that regulation and innovation *can* coexist. Yeah, sure. Just like oil and water. It’s mostly just a bunch of feel-good PR about how California is “leading the way” while simultaneously making things more complicated for everyone involved. They’re also trying to avoid another EU situation where everything gets strangled in red tape before it even launches.

Honestly, it’s all a waste of time and resources. But hey, at least it gives someone something to do besides argue about TikTok bans. Don’t expect this to actually *prevent* anything bad from happening; it just means more paperwork and compliance costs. And probably a lot of bullshit “AI safety” reports that are as useful as tits on a boar.

Speaking of useless regulations, I once had to spend three days reconfiguring a router because some idiot in accounting decided it needed to be compliant with a standard that didn’t even *exist* yet. Three days! I could have automated half the damn internet in that time. But no, gotta follow the rules…even when the rules are made up by people who think a MAC address is a type of lipstick.
