Oh, *Now* They Want to Make the Home App Useful?
Right. Google’s finally decided their Home app is a steaming pile of garbage and are throwing Gemini at it like a band-aid on a severed limb. After years of letting it rot, they’re slapping in some AI “smarts” – basically, Gemini will now try to *understand* what you want instead of needing precise, robotic commands. Shocking.
They’re touting “Routines” that are supposed to be more flexible and less…painful to set up. Apparently, it can now handle stuff like “make the house cozy” which translates to dimming lights and playing music. Groundbreaking. They’ve also added a ‘View all cameras’ feature…because *obviously* that should have been there from day one. And some bullshit about summarizing camera footage? Like I don’t already get 20 notifications a day about squirrels.
The biggest thing is Gemini integration for troubleshooting, so it can maybe, possibly, figure out why your thermostat is being a dick. Don’t hold your breath though. It’s still Google we’re talking about here. Expect vague error messages and endless loops of unhelpful suggestions.
It’s rolling out over the next few weeks. Prepare to be mildly inconvenienced slightly less than before. Don’t expect miracles, you’ll just get more frustrated when it inevitably fails. Honestly, I’m not even sure why they bother sometimes.

You know, I once spent three hours on the phone with Google support trying to get a smart bulb to connect. Three *hours*. The rep kept telling me to factory reset it, even though I’d already done it fifteen times. Finally, he admitted it was a known issue and they were “working on it.” Working on it for how long? Apparently since the dawn of time. This Gemini update feels like that all over again – a desperate attempt to fix problems they created in the first place. Don’t get your hopes up.
