Electronics giant Avnet confirms breach, says stolen data unreadable

Avnet Got Pwned, Surprise!

Oh Joy. Another Breach. Avnet This Time.

Right, listen up you lot. Apparently, Avnet – yeah, the electronics distributor, for those of you who haven’t heard of them because you have a life – got hit with a data breach. Shocking, isn’t it? Like leaving your front door open and wondering why things are missing.

Some ransomware gang (they don’t name *which* one, naturally, because reasons) managed to snag a bunch of their data. They’re claiming it was “limited” but come on, who says that? Everyone claims limited. They’ve said the stolen stuff is “unreadable” now, which translates to: “We encrypted it and probably lost the key, or are hoping you won’t bother trying to decrypt it.” Don’t hold your breath waiting for a full accounting of what was actually nicked.

They’re “working with experts” (read: expensive consultants who will tell them everything they already know) and law enforcement. Standard procedure, meaning absolutely nothing useful will come of it except a lot of wasted money. They’ve notified authorities and are doing the usual song and dance about improving security. Like that’ll actually happen.

So yeah, another company gets reamed, claims minimal damage, and hopes you forget about it. Don’t.

Honestly, I’m starting to think everyone just *wants* to get hacked at this point. It’s cheaper than proper security, apparently.

Speaking of unreadable data, I once had a sysadmin tell me his backups were “secure” because they were stored on floppy disks. Floppy disks! In 2008! I swear, some people are actively trying to get fired. It’s infuriating.
