North Korean hackers stole over $2 billion in crypto this year

Seriously?! Another Crypto Heist

North Korea’s Been Robbing Everyone Blind (Again)

Oh, fantastic. Like we didn’t have enough problems, the goddamn North Koreans are at it again. Apparently, their “cyber actors” – let’s call them what they are: thieves – have managed to pilfer over $2 billion in cryptocurrency this year alone. Two BILLION. You know, while the rest of us are trying not to get completely screwed by inflation and bad economic policy.

They’re using all sorts of crap too – phishing, exploiting vulnerabilities (because apparently some people *still* click on links from strangers), and good old-fashioned malware. Lazarus Group is the main culprit, but there’s a whole bunch of other groups involved because one bunch of assholes wasn’t enough. They target supply chains, DeFi platforms… basically anything with crypto in it.

And what are they doing with all this stolen money? Funding their weapons programs, naturally. Because building nukes is apparently cheaper when you’re not paying for food or basic human rights. The UN report says they’re getting *really* good at laundering the cash through mixers and using increasingly sophisticated techniques to avoid detection. Shocking.

So yeah, another year, another massive crypto theft by a regime that couldn’t care less about international law or common decency. Honestly, I’m starting to think the entire crypto space is just one giant honeypot for these guys. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Related Anecdote: I once had to debug a system where someone thought it was a good idea to store database passwords in plain text. Plain text! The level of incompetence…it makes dealing with North Korean hackers almost understandable. Almost.
