SoftBank bulks up its robotics portfolio with ABB Group’s robotics unit

SoftBank’s Latest Clusterfuck

Oh, *Great*. More Robots.

Right, so SoftBank, those geniuses who bet the farm on WeWork and a bunch of other spectacularly awful ideas, are at it again. They’re buying ABB’s robotics division. Yes, another chunk of metal and wires to add to their already overflowing pile of “future tech” that probably won’t amount to much. Apparently, they think throwing more money at robots will magically fix… something? I don’t know, maybe world peace? Probably not.

ABB is selling because, shocker, running a robotics business isn’t as easy as just printing cash like SoftBank seems to believe. They want to focus on *actual* profitable stuff, which is frankly a sensible move. Softbank’s Vision Fund will now own even MORE robots, including logistics bots and industrial arms. Expect lots of press releases about “synergy” and “AI-powered automation,” followed by years of underwhelming results.

The deal’s worth $210 million, which is chump change for SoftBank but still a waste if you ask me. They’re hoping to combine this with Boston Dynamics (because *of course* they own Boston Dynamics) and some other robotics companies they’ve inexplicably acquired. It’s like collecting Beanie Babies – except these cost millions and will likely just sit in a warehouse gathering dust.

Honestly, I give it five years before this whole thing implodes spectacularly. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Speaking of robots, I once had to debug a system controlling an automated paint line. The robot kept painting the *floor* instead of the cars. Turns out some idiot had reversed the X and Y axes in the configuration file. Hours wasted because someone couldn’t tell left from right. That’s about as successful as SoftBank’s robotics ventures are going to be, mark my words.
